Let's face it...following the ketogenic diet is tough).
Of course, the results have been proven over and over again. There’s no doubt this is a very effective way of burning fat, improving brain function, increasing energy and feeling younger…
But it’s just so hard to maintain.
I mean, you pretty much have to cut so many of your favourite and delicious foods by depriving and starving yourself.
Unfortunately, for us, our bodies have been designed in such a way that the more you deprive the body of it’s nutrients in the form of food, the more it’s bound to rebound…from all the effort you put into your weight loss efforts and bring it back to a naught…
I know, because that’s exactly what happened to me.
I lost 21 pounds on the ketogenic diet….
And then I gained it all back because I couldn’t take it anymore…
You see, being married for 25 years or more to a woman who is a wonderful cook, has it’s set of advantages and disadvantages. You get to enjoy all the good food in the world.
At the same time, it’s the disadvantages that one has to be vary of. And for me it was my habitual sweet tooth that was causing the problem.
With advancing age, as the years went on, I became almost 80 pounds overweight and started to have some health scares…
A trip to the doctor revealed that I was borderline Type 2 diabetic, and from there on I decided to make a change right then and there.
But at 59, for me it was hard to even imagine that I could make such a drastic transformation at that stage of my life.
The results other people were getting from it were very encouraging to me. I thought, this might actually work for me…
So I decided to learn more about how the body forces itself to burn away fat by producing ketones from not having too many carbs as part of the diet.
The results were encouraging at first…
Int the first weeks into the diet, I lost 21 pounds…
However, forgot that I had one major weakness that was about to derail all the efforts that I had put in all these weeks. My love for sweets and desserts…
My wife is an incredible baker and runs baking classes for neighbourhood housewives. Therefore, our home is always filled with the smell of delicious sweets that have you coming back for more every time.
At times, when the temptation was too strong, and I couldn’t it resist anymore…
I began to sneak in sweets throughout the day…
It was like I just couldn’t control my rampant cravings that were going wild throughout the day.
It is common sense that anyone on a diet, especially a ketogenic diet, knows that sugar is the last thing you should eat, if you want the body to steadily maintain the state of ketosis.
I was repeatedly rebounding back and forth on the scale, like a yoyo, losing weight and gaining more weight, depending on whether I could control my cravings.
It was a nightmare...
I felt like giving up on the diet and just eat whatever I wanted. At that point in time, I couldn’t care about all the efforts and that I had already put in all these months to reach this stage.
Being over the age of 50, the rebound weight gain effect hit my body pretty hard…
And in half the time it took me to lose that weight, I gained it all back and felt like I had aged another 20 years…
I was about to give up all hope...
the moment that changed my life...
My wife saw me going through the changes and saw how much I was suffering. One day she sat down with me and asked me what she could do to help.
I thought there was no solution, that I was doomed for the rest of my life…
I shared my experiences with keto that I had and the role that sugar played. I didn’t know what to do. I was on the verge of tears when her eyes lit up…I could tell she had an idea.
She went to the nearby store and after she returned, told me to stay out of the kitchen for some time. I just laid on the couch feeling sorry for myself.
Shortly after, she brought me a slice of the most decadent and incredible-looking chocolate cake (my favourite) that I’d ever seen in my life.
I told her that there was no way I could eat it!.
She urged me to try a piece, and although my conscience was telling me not to, I couldn’t resist…
I took in a mouthful and I could feel every ounce of stress in me dissolve.
I couldn’t help myself… I ate the entire slice.
It was so delicious and rich that my mouth was watering for more…
She told me to go ahead and have another slice:
There was no sugar and barely any carbs in it!
How could something so decadent and delicious have no sugar and yet be low in carbs?
She explained how she was able to find zero-carb alternatives to sugar that worked just as well as processed sugar and found alternatives for flour, grains and any other artificial ingredients that are added to traditional desserts.
now i can have my cake and eat it too (Without having to worry about my sugar)!
