How a cup of coffee revived a 20 year relationship

For every woman, the concept of marriage is nothing of short of a a fairy tale ending “and they lived happily ever after”.

For a 50 year old mother of two, happily married for over 20 years, with two teens and a loving, committed husband, one could not ask for anything more in life, except for one thing.

I weighed 220 lbs on the Scale!!

I would eat anything that I could lay my hands on particularly my favourite brand of cookies and ice-cream, which I just could not resist.

Being well aware of my family history of both my parents and elder siblings suffering from high blood pressure and heart disease, did not make any difference either.

I tried quick diet plans, only to end up on the higher side of the scale once I got off the plan. There was no such thing as self – control and discipline.

though i did not realize it earlier, my husband was slowly pulling back from me as the days went by!

It took me a while to realize that my husband was slowly pulling away from me. Earlier, on Friday evening, the kids were dropped off to their grandparents. It was the maid’s day off on weekends. With no one to disturb us, weekends were spent lazing around in bed till late, helping each other with the regular household chores, enjoying a full body massage or a hot shower together, followed by an occasional lunch or dinner at the nearby restaurant. This way we maintained our intimacy in our relationship.

Sundays were reserved for the kids at the grandparents place. Over the past few months, this had not been happening. My husband  started spending weekends at his office rather than with me. Maybe this was due to the additional work load. I did not pay much attention to that as I had never bothered with his work culture.

Until One Fine Day...

It was the middle of the night. I had suddenly woken up and saw a flash of light in the living room. Not finding my husband by my side, I went to the living room. What I saw brought my world crashing down. My husband was sitting with his laptop…

Momentarily, too shocked to react, I went back to the room, with my head between the pillows, cried the entire night!!

The next day, after the kids had left for school, at the breakfast table, I confronted my husband. He was too shocked to react for the time being. After a stoic silence, I directly questioned him that he did not love me anymore because I was too fat and that no one loves an elephant!!
My husband still tried to reason that it was by mistake that he had clicked the link and that he still loved me. But I was still not convinced and started doubting his intentions more so after what had happened last night. Every action of my husband was viewed with suspicion till the time…

He confessed that he genuinely wanted to make up and all that needed was to share a cup of coffee for the next 15 days… He managed to convince me that having the morning cup of coffee and spending time together would work wonders on our relationship.

With nothing to lose and everything to gain including getting my intimacy back, I half heartedly agreed to his proposal. However, before going for the date, he wanted me to make sure that the reading on the scale was right. Surprised at his weird request, I went to the scale and checked…

It still read 220 lbs on the scale…
The next day I was pleasantly surprised to find that when I woke up, my husband had already prepared the coffee. He offered one cup to me and we enjoyed our coffee together.
As the days went by, I had almost forgotten what had happened on that fateful night and was beginning to enjoy my husband’s company on the pretext of our coffee date.
I suddenly began feeling more energetic throughout the day and suddenly started feeling that my food cravings had almost vanished.
At the end of one week…
I was spring cleaning my drawers and came across a pair of jeans that I had put away as they were too tight to put on. Out of curiousity, I decided to put them on as they were once my favourite pair of jeans. To my surprise…
they fitted perfectly well!

A week after I accepted my huband’s invitation for the coffee date, I was already two dress sizes down! With my new found confidence and my favourite pair of jeans, and without any major change in my regular diet plan and my regular lifestyle, what could be the reason for this dramatic transformation?

The only new activity that I added to my list of activities was my cup of coffee in the morning with my husband. Did the coffee have something to do with it? The next day I shared this experience that I had with my old jeans during my coffee break with my husband. He only smiled and then said that we still have one more week for the promise that I had made.

One more week went by…
The week went by very fast. With every approaching day, my energy levels were soaring and I was completely surprised that my yearning for my favourite brand of cookies and my afternoon cup of tea had almost vanished. Besides, I was finding it more energetic to participate in my kid’s activities. I had also given up on my afternoon naps and went to bed half an hour earlier and woke up earlier than my husband, eagerly waiting for his cup of coffee…
my 25th wedding anniversary was fast approaching…
My 25th anniversary was round the corner and I wanted to surprise my husband by getting into the dress that he had gifted to me on our honeymoon that I had preserved till date, though it was not fitting me anymore. It was lying at the bottom pile of the clothes in my wardrobe.
The happenings of the past two weeks aroused my curiousity further and I again begged my husband to reveal the secret behind his idea of a coffee date. With a smile on his face he patiently told me to wait for another two weeks and that he would reveal the secret.
Having spent 25 precious years of my life with the same person, there was a level of trust that was there and besides, I had started getting used to his serving the coffee in bed, which he had never done all these years! So I decided to play along… After all, I had nothing to lose… In the meantime on the scale…

40 Lbs of ugly fat had disappeared from my body in under 30 days! The reading on the scale showed 180 Lbs!

D Day finally arrives…
It was my 25th anniversary and as ususal was waiting for my husband to bring in the cup of coffee and wish him.

This time, however, I was surprised when instead of the cup of coffee, I found a packet in his hand. He told me that it was his anniversary gift and that he wanted me to open it in front of him. I opened the packet and was surprised…
It was one of the dresses that I had seen him commenting on one of his instagram profiles!
He told me to take off my dress and put it on in front of him, which I willingly did… To my surprise, it was a perfect fit!

He took my hand and led me to the mirror… I could barely recognize myself. The transformation froma an elephant to the perfect bikini figure was awesome… That too in under 6 weeks!
My husband hugged me, and wished me a happy anniversary. Then he shared the secret behind the coffee date. He had always admired my petite figure since the time that we got married. And he wanted me to have the figure back. Having seen me fail at various diets, without getting the results that I wanted, he found that the cure lies in within the body and its systems. All that it needed was a little tweak. And he found this little coffee tweak that he had been sharing with with me all these days…

in conclusion

Managing a healthy lifestyle is all about choice and accordingly developing the habits that are necessary in order to maintain it. For me it was a choice that made out of a compulsion to save my marriage rather than a voluntary choice. And I am glad that I took that choice.

Life has taken a complete U-turn and it feels as if my life is reversed by 20 years, the same youthfulness that I had at the time I got married. In fact, in order to strengthen our relationship, we are contemplating a second honeymoon and have already started the preparations for the same…
