DOES EATING ICE CREAM BEFORE GOING TO BED KEEP YOU AWAKE?

if you’re like me or any other person, who cannot do without a bowl of ice cream before bed because it is one of our favourite desserts, better watch your blood sugar levels frequently once you start aging.

A bowl of ice cream may be alluring in the short term; however, it is a poor choice for dessert or a pre-bedtime snack for one major reason. According to nutritionists, consuming sugar or sugary substances a couple of hours before going to bed, causes the blood sugar levels in the body to fluctuate in an irregular manner, thereby disturbing sleep patterns.

The irregular spikes in the blood sugar levels cause the metabolic activity in the body to fall as the body is in a state of rest while at sleep. Therefore, there is a tendency for sleep to get disturbed.

Besides if one is already suffering from poor sleep habits or comorbidities like blood pressure or diabetes it is best to avoid ice-cream and other dairy products before going to bed. The logical reason is that dairy products often contain a high level of fat, particularly processed dairy products like ice creams.

However, low fat dairy products like low fat milk, may be an exception and promote healthy sleep patterns, though certain nutritionists differ on the same and don’t recommend milk before going to bed as part of a diet plan.

As part of lifestyle habits, if the body has already been conditioned to accept milk as a remedy for healthy sleep patterns, there is no problem so long as it does not contain sugar. The best replacement that has worked for me is a cup of warm milk laced with honey and a pinch of turmeric. This not only promotes healthy sleep patterns, at the same time boosts immunity levels.

Other healthier replacements for promoting healthy sleep patterns would include green tea with a pinch of ginger, chamomile tea, or a cup of black coffee, though caffeine also tends to disturb sleep patterns in certain body types.

According to a 2019 study on students, published in the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine, in a survey conducted on students who were appearing for their examinations, very few students reported getting “good-quality sleep” after consuming diets higher in added sugar, compared to those who used alternatives like caffeine or green tea.

There are exceptions to every rule and though consuming added sugar may be bad for overall health, in the long term, you need to understand your own body’s signals and metabolic activity based on personal eating habits and diet patterns. It is not necessary that what may be bad for others can also be bad for your body.

As a thumb rule nutritionists recommend that sugary foods should be avoided at least two hours before bedtime for the fats to break down properly as your digestive system also affects your sleeping patterns.

As for me, enjoying a bowl of my favourite chocolate chips ice cream on a weekend does not impact my sleeping patterns adversely. Ultimately a healthy lifestyle is all about moderation whether it is diet, sleep, or sex, rather than in excess or completely avoiding the activity at all.

Fortunately, the incredibly delicious desserts that I’m about to share with you have no processed sugars or preservatives.
